It looks too good to be true. In fact, I think it is. It should have some checking. That looks like poly (ester? urethane? I don't know)And the trem spring cover seems wrong.Anyone want to weigh in, or drop $1200.
coolfeel Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 It looks nice - I don't know about "too good to be true" but it is pretty clean...
crunchee Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hamer-USA-1985-Steve-Stevens-I-Guitar-Near-Mint-/171012681917?pt=Guitar&hash=item27d12670bd Wow. It looks too good to be true. In fact, I think it is. It should have some checking. That looks like poly (ester? urethane? I don't know) And the trem spring cover seems wrong. Anyone want to weigh in, or drop $1200. Once upon a time, just a couple of years ago, I had three '80 Specials. They all had factory nitrocelluose finishes, playing wear, little dings and scrapes from use, but NONE had any finish checking. Just because it's a nitro finish doesn't mean it'll automatically check IF it's cared for properly, and kept indoors in a climate controlled area, "Closet Classic" reissue finishes or not...though it might, eventually. Wood and finishes do what they want to do, depending on the climate or any changes in it. Taking guitars to a gig, in the case, out into cold weather, leaving them in the cold weather for awhile, THEN bringing them indoors to a warm area and immediately opening the case without any warm-up time, are an almost sure-fire recipe for weatherchecking a nitro finish. I also once had a early '80's Blitz with a Sustain Block trem, it had the exact same two-ply plastic spring cavity cover. Yes, they don't match the aluminum control cavity panel; and yes, they look cheesy; but apparently they're original. I think Andrew has mentioned them before. $1200? I'll pass. I don't have the fundage even if I wanted to. Edited to add: I never go only on anybody's use of the words "Mint" or "Near Mint", when they describe something that is used (or "pre-owned") for sale. Ever.

Studio Custom Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 He's steadfast at $1100 which is too much IMO for a rosewood 22 fretter.
serial Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 It looks completely straight to me, just very clean. That lines up with the very clean ohsc. No funny business that I can see-trem plate is correct for an earlier 85.
Jem Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I'm with Steve, very clean and everything add's up including the tiny collaboration transfer on the back of the headstock.
Andrew Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Serial's right. They don't all check/crack and the circa 85 black was second to none in terms of a perfect finish. The number and Steve Stevens Copyright are also correct as is the large two-ply trem cover, although many were single ply by this stage. Recessed covers appeared late 85 on the Scepter but not on all the other models straight away.
bcsride Posted March 25, 2013 Author Posted March 25, 2013 Thanks all.Perhaps my faith in human kind needs a boost: I shouldn't be so suspicious.I won't pull the trigger, err - as I don't want to. But I think $1200 isn't bad. The '88 red mint SS1 with rosewood, dots, and 24 frets went for $1580 a couple of months back.
