sixesandsevens Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Wow.. what crappy pix...Um, I do not think that word means what you think it means.I'm also embarrassed to say this but looking at your pics is the first time it dawned on me that the ML is half V, half Z.
Armitage Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 A you'd be even more embarrassed to find the Caddy is half Z, half Les Paul... ish.
svl Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Don't ya mean half EXPLORER, half Paul(ish)? Since you look to be the man with the Dean plan, Arm, any shrimpfork headstocked Caddy's hiding in that stash you'd want to part with?
Armitage Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I called it a Z because sixesandsevens did... And no, Sorry. I've never been a fan of the HUGE headstocks, or the Shrimp Forks... so I've kind of kept away from them.
veatch Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 A you'd be even more embarrassed to find the Caddy is half Z, half Les Paul... ish.I'd make that half mini-Z, half Les Paul.-ish
diablo175 Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I'm sorry but I just don't get the Cadillac design. I mean, I get the concept but I just don't like it. Butt ugly. Like someone did an unspeakable amalgam of a Lester ass and a ML head. Like Willie Mays Hayes Rolls Royce grill on a Beetle body.
serial Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Ted-I know where a great looking one is that is possibly available. Message me.
Rich_S Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Ahoy Mates, I'm BTMN and I sail the Seven Zs. Ohhhhhh.... now I know what this "shrimp fork" you've been talking about is. I've said this before, but I'll take the natural with the zebras, upper right.
zorrow Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 I think all those Deans look truly amazing. As of the design of the Cadillac goes, it has for me a very over-the-top-but-classy look. IMHO, the "Cadillac" branding fits the model very well: That *is* a "sleek black Cadillac", isn't it?
dragan Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 deans wife was a playboy bunny or something , is that her?
Armitage Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 The picture is of Sherri Shattuck, a Playboy cover model, and the photo was taken by RK a Playboy photographer Dean knew. For you older guys, RK was Barbi Benton's brother! Sherri was standing on a glass block in the Chicago Y.M.C.A., and that picture was combined with a shot of the sun rising over Lake Michigan. She also dropped the guitar, Dean's personal, in the pool. Dean dated many hot chicks back then, including at least one Playboy Model, but I don't know if he married a Playboy model.
diablo175 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 I woulda withheld her pay for dropping the guitar in the pool... until she offered to drop the bathing suit for some exclusive, private photos... heh heh heh

Aw hell, Zorrow, almost any guitar's gonna look classy in black with white binding, gold hardware and blocks. Frankly, it's the Lester ass-end that looks classy. But don't misinterpret my post: I love me some Z/ML/whatever front part. Just not on a LP bottom.
BTMN Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 I'm the opposite on that. I can dig the combo. I own 1 Caddy and 1 ML. Don't get excited enough to own multiples of those body styles though. It's the Zs and Vs for me.Oh, I do have a nice Korean made EVO, LP copyish in Bass Boat Sparkle Goldtop with P90s.

sixesandsevens Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 The import lines, in my opinion, can get hairy in the entry and beginner levels but most of the upper level imports are fair guitars. Especially many of the Korean lines. http://www.deanguitars.com/electrics.php For those that have spent time with them, at what price point do you feel like the imports start to get decent? I'm guessing last year's 35th anniversary (at around $800 new) or this year's Chicago Series ($550+) are into the "fair" range? I played a 35th anniversary V for a bit at a shop... While the fit, finish and feel were good, it wasn't love at first strum, so I passed on it. My first guitar was a Z-shape, so I've been thinking of going back there with one of the Chicago Series models. With a 15% coupon at MF/GC, it would be like $466 for the unbound ones. At this point, I'm trying to talk myself out of waiting (maybe indefinitely) for the stars to align for me to pick up a USA Standard.
BTMN Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Custom import runs, the Straight Six line, the 35th Anniversary, and the Chicago Series are good for the dollars. Used 79 Series Korean imports can run like that. You want to try it if you can. They will all need a setup to your personal tastes. EVERY Dean I bring in gets a pickup height adjustment as soon as it is in the door no matter USA or import.I have had good experiences with 79 Series guitars. I have 5 79 Series guitars currently, 3 Zs, 1 V, and 1 ML. I also have Z and V Basses that are custom runs with basically 79 Series bodies on them. I tried to get a certain number 35th Z but passed when it did not work out. Cool guitars that feel a little like 1978 Deans. Kind of done with new imports and it has to be a really good deal/guitar to want to buy it used. I would rather hunt up a nice '96 USA or newer USA.Great stuff coming out of the Tampa shop. The USA 1000 Series are USA cut, routed, built, fretted, shipped to Korea and back after finished, and then completed. USA guitars but finished in Korea. Those are going New $900- $1200 depending on dealer/deal. Might consider one of them. I have played a few that were great but only available in opaque colors so kind of not me.
Armitage Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 It still amazes me it's cheaper to ship a guitar half way around the world to have a finish sprayed on it and shipped back rather then have it done here.
BTMN Posted July 3, 2013 Posted July 3, 2013 Quantity is why it is cheaper and perhaps use of processes that are more expensive, read more environmentally regulated, here than there would be my take but I have no knowledge of that.
