Hfan Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Daddy's Junky Music used to calmly state that they would pay half what they thought they could sell it for. They gave more on trades, but for cash buys, that was the deal.Don't like it? Sell it yourself. That's excactly our schpeel! I told him that going in, and he's like, I want $475 so I guess we can't do business.Tell him GC would probably give him $500 because they are a nation wide chain..
Drendino Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Someone wanted us to buy their guitar. A guitar that had been selling for as low as 400, they wanted us to give them 475. Baffled by people who want to sell gear to the store and expect us to pay equal to/more than what the gear sells for. Seriously. What process goes on in someone's mind to even propose such a deal? Are they clueless? Indignant? I really want to turn the tables and dissect how they come up with their numbers, determine if they realize the store has to make a profit, and have the light bulb go off for them, but alas, I just vent here and probably alienate someone.I would say the only time it is reasonable for someone to request anything near market value would be if they were taking it on trade and the guitar being purchased had decent profit margin. I recently traded up with one of the "big guys". They gave me full retail for my ES 335 and I bought a higher end guitar that they had in inventory for a while.
hamerhead Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 You need to hire Hamerhead Tim, along with his "Stupid Stick" ;0Let me tell you a little story about the stupid stick. It has been well overused this week.
HSB0531 Posted November 9, 2013 Posted November 9, 2013 Tell them to go watch an episode or two of Pawn Stars to get with the program...Exactly^^^People think that you're supposed to alleviate them of their stuff and resell it at a loss, or no profit at all.

Everybody has to sell their first guitar sometime, and it might be the first thing they ever tried to sell.

It's a good way to learn, that if somebody at a retail store not only agrees, but actually WANTS to pay the seller's asking price, there is something VERY wrong going on.
Brooks Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 i've lost some $$ on almost everything i've ever sold (with the exception of a les paul),because i PRICE TO SELL. also, i look at gig money and equipment buying/selling all as "music transactions",so i could keep selling at a loss and never play another gig again and still die way ahead.
sixesandsevens Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 We've got one used gear shop around here (Atomic) that will buy back from you at 75% of what you paid them if you have your receipt. For the lazy, that takes the sting out a little.
