WTB Buy - Gig amp in the $500 to $600 range - Cleans are most important!

I'm getting back in to gigging, and I'm looking for something that won't blow the budget...I'm a little spoiled as I've gigged a Carr Rambler for a long time until a few months ago -- when I sold a bunch of my gear b/c I thought my gigging days were done frown.gif

Anyway, I'm trying to get back to gigging, and want an amp that will help me get there.

Must have items are: Clean Tone is #1, Must be Pedal Friendly, I'm really looking for a combo / but would consider a head / cab setup if the price was right. COSMETIC CONDITION IS NOT A CONCERN....but must be functional right out of the gate.

Things like an effects loop are great, but not a necessity...I like 6L6 tubes most but I'm down w/ 6v6's, EL84's or EL34's as long as the clean is nice.

I like Fender type cleans the most so there's a baseline for you....Some ideal stuff for me would be:

Beat to Heck Silverface amps, Rivera combo's, Older Mesa single 12 combo's, Groove Tubes Soul-O 45, Music Man amps...etc.

If somebody is interested in a Big Baby Taylor w/ nice Taylor Gig Bag then I could include this in the deal and maybe increase my budget up to $800 or $900...I'd put the trade value on the Big Baby at $375.

PM me let me know what you've got.

Thanks.

Super Champ X2 x 2.

Stereo, baby.

Or a pair of Pro Juniors. Brutally loud and with two you can keep 'em clean.

But does this thing REALLY sound like a Fender?

Most definitely.

I'm no expert, but I've owned Fenders since '71.

Absolutely. The clean channel is pure Fender. And the first three models on the B channel are varying levels of Tweed.

But, like Hamerhead, I'm no expert. I've only used Fenders since 1965.

Manwhile, I'm eyeing my spare Teefused Classic 30 and Music Man 65....

You will think me daft for suggesting this amp if you're a guy who relies on "internet reviews" when selecting gear, but if you can deal with a 60 lb. combo I highly recommend you check out a used Genz Benz El Diablo 60 combo. Very good clean sounds in the warm channel and you have the hot channel for anything from AC/DC crunch to Metallica grind depending on which gain structure you choose. Also comes with a footswitch and has lots of features that can be controlled via the footswitch.

The amp can take either 6L6's or EL34's (bias pot and selector switch on back of amp), has individual channel volume and reverb, it can be switched from 60W down to a more club friendly 30W via a switch on the back, and the best part...since so many self-proclaimed 'tone gurus' slammed the amp they can be found on the used market in the $300 - $500 range all day long. Very versatile and well built gig amp on the cheap (used).

Check out the thread in the "Ask the Experts" section about the Fender Blues Deluxe Reissue. Johnny B. attached a link to some reviews that have me thinking about checking one of these out.

Used, one of these will get ya in right on or under budget and Ebay has the Fromel mod kits available too.

Contrarian recommendation: Tech21 Trademark 60.

Yes, I DID just recommend a solid state amp. I think it is the ultimate gigging / pedal platform amp:

  • Maintenance free
  • Lightweight
  • Takes pedals fantastically
  • Built-in Sansamp
  • Effects Loop
  • Plenty of Power (that can be supplemented with Power Engine(s))

For recording, maybe not, but put a TM60 next to a [insert name of 90 lb. Fender] and let me know how many of your audience can tell the difference. I think they really sound good, too.

Oh, ETA: relatively inexpensive, too! Especially used.

Pro Jr blew my mind last weekend. Definitely caught me off guard.

MJ, buy a Traynor YGM-3 and clip the presence cap......you will have a clean machine that is built rock solid and will take pedals extremely well....right in your price range for a vintage amp too. I picked one up a few months ago and now understand all the internet fuss. 2 EL84s and it is a DR killer. It will need a new speaker, though. Lots of great choices there.

I am not a pedal guy so I just use it for cleans....but O what cleans!

PM me for more info.
