bubs_42 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Or any other lower wattage speakers? I loved Greenbacks but only wanted to carry a 2x12 but kept burning them up. So I moved to the Celestions Higher Wattage offerings. I'm using Tone Tubbys at the moment and i'm going to mix my another cab with Eminence Speakers. But I did get a TT San Rafael 25 Watter to try in something at some point. Mojo was selling a still in the box on ebay for 45 shipping so I bought it. I'm interested to see what it sounds like.If your using a Low Watt Speaker what is it? Amp Wattages are moving lower now a days.
dragan Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Never used greenbacks , way back I used JBL k120s and or EV Sro , then Celestioin 1275s , then Kendrick , then switched to celestion g12h30s or their alnicos , but I've got 10 amps with different speakers , what ever sounds right with the amp also using weber ??? And eminence Man O War in amps
Disturber Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 Always use Greenbacks. No other speaker has "the tone". I use the G12H's right now though, with the heavier magnet. Just like Hendrix did. Got four that are all from the earlier part of the 1970's. Great speakers. The G12H 70th Anniversary is my 2nd choice when it comes to Celestions. Techncially it's a Greenback, it just does not have the green back....
carfish7 Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I still do. The weedman doesn't take credit cards..........
tbabinec Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I have a Greenback in a Victoria Tweed Deluxe 5e3 and it's a good match.
Brooks Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 And eminence Man O War in ampsi haven't tried everything, but these are my fave speakers by far.
Disturber Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 You won't burn a 2x12 G12H greenback cabinet up with a 50 watt Marshall. This is how I run 'em all the time. My band collegue has a Bluesbreaker combo, with two G12M-12 Greenbacks in it. Has not blewn them either.... You must have played mighty loud if you blew them.....
bubs_42 Posted January 11, 2014 Author Posted January 11, 2014 I've mellowed but I used to be pretty damn loud. Now not so much, even on a good night out at a open mic.
Jakeboy Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I am a bit of a speaker whore......I have several 30 waters, some 20 watt Weber Blue Pups, and a plethora of 12s from 30 watts to 150 watt Emi Texas Heats (great speaker btw).Fave low wattage speakers:Weber 12a125a in my tweed deluxeWeber Legacy 30 watt Emi Red Fang...original 30 watterCelestion 70tj Anny G12h30Overall fave? Probably the Red fang or original vintage EV SRO alnico. They ROCK!I didn't like the GBs in my Bluesbreaker, but I LOVE G12h30s in anything I have put them in. GBs are the classic Marshall tone.
Drendino Posted January 11, 2014 Posted January 11, 2014 I have stock 2X12 Greenbacks in my 30 watt Swart SST. It is surprisingly loud for a 30 watt amp but surprisingly quiet for a 2X12. Its self biasing and can handle 4 6V6s as well as 2 EL34s. Love the tone and have no intention of trying anything else.
bubs_42 Posted January 11, 2014 Author Posted January 11, 2014 I have used the G12H30 Anniversary's for a while. The 50 Watt Version that Egnater puts in the Tweaker 40 combo is really nice sounding. I might put this little Tubby in with another with its bigger brother and see what happens. I'll also be looking to pair something with an Eminence C Rex. I wouldn't mind finding a used Canis Major

U think it might work? It's a fairly bright amp.

But, in my 4x12 I pair them with G12Hs (as most above have suggested). I've used a 2X12 with the pair of 25 watters for years from a 60W amp with no burn out problems. The g12Hs will buy you an extra 10 watts of handling, but I'm curious: Are you like, cranking your amp through them alot? What is the amp?
gorch Posted January 13, 2014 Posted January 13, 2014 I have a 1x12 fitted with a UK made Greenback. Although I like it, it does not get used very much since there is no amp feeding it.
Jakeboy Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 Disturber, the Red Fang is now rated at 50 watts, but according to those who spoke to Anthony at Emi! nothing has changed. The speaker was always 50 watts supposedly but Emi marked it as 30 cause it was competing with the 15 watt Blue.I do not know if there is a difference I just know I love that speaker!
HamerHokie Posted January 14, 2014 Posted January 14, 2014 I gig with them in a 2x12 driven by a 50-watt Marshall. No problems so far, although I rarely have the amp cranked past 4.
dobieboy Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 I continue to use and love the Celestion G12 - 65 ...
velorush Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 My Reeves 1X12 combo came with a Reeves greenback clone that I swapped out a few years ago for a Celestion Alnico Blue.I've forgotten what it sounded like with the greenback clone. Anyone know what the difference would be if I swapped back?
