Distortion- Amp or FX?

david gilmore is a very tasteful player and has wonderful tone, one of my favs is the tone he gets in "the wall"

I am not sure what he uses for gain, but he can do pinch harmonics and metalish flowing leads but his Strat always rings through. Probably just delay, a overdrive box or something, and some good mixing?

Wanted to add that I believe some guitars are just meant for amp overdrive and they sound great, like the SG. Others, maybe the strat, can handle more effects without losing personality.

Mesa/Boogie Mark I 1978 60W head

- 4×6L6 and 2×12AX7 tubes. The amp was used for boost and distortion.

Dave has a great system to contain his effects and it seems like he is a genius at tweaking his tone through EQ.

Cranked up blackface Fender Bassman ain't bad:

Sounds like Mike's Bassmans are modded. My old Bassman head cannot get that sound, even with a P90-equipped guitar up front and pushing a Marshall 4x12. Nice sound, but not exactly "just add water". Wonder if this mod has been published for DIYers.

articles I've read say his amps are modified by Fred Taccone and/or Billy Zoom.

Amp until lately as even this 4 watt amp is too loud for my tinnitus, so I just play inot Jamup on my IPAD.

Guess I'll put this up for sale.

I use virtual amps, but I go straight into the soundcard's input (HI-Z). Many others use the USB. Does that still require a small preamp, like a pedal? If it is a IPAD I am assuming no. Can you still get good overdrive with just software?

I just loaded Jamup on my IPAD and use the Jamup interface into it. Nothing else. They sound ok, nothing like a real amp in my opinion. For me, I can run them super low volume since any thing over say a loud TV kills my ears.

I need to explore those a bit. I know that the old Rockman was built like a small amp, so it had some real juice behind it. I have tried using Amplitube 3 on my computer without a preamp, and it has everything I need except authentic distortion, or at least enough to play a metalish lead. Was not sure if using the M-Audio USB cable would make it sound different. Guess I will have to see for myself :)

It is cool to be able to play into a phone! A little overdrive, verb and slow vibrato.

I'm on the iRig HD into iPad with garageband for a couple of weeks. It's pretty straight forward.

So the iRig acts as the preamp, it adds signal strength between your guitar and the computer device

I am happy using my amp as a preamp to the computer, but it would be nice to have that portability, and ease. Just turn on your phone and grab a guitar.

Amplitube software with preamp turned to .05 and no EQ. So low you can't hear amp if you unplug line to computer.

depends entirely on what kind of sound I'm looking for. Also there are some pedals these days that have a ton more options than any amp overdrive/distortion, and you don't need to blow down walls to get it.

This/\

I initially sought a way to get that huge gain sound in a low volume setting where cranking one's half stack or whatever was not an option. For that matter, neither was having a half stack-

And yes, I have a half stack. And I've got combos. And I've got a fire-breathing marshall TSL122 that even as a 2x12 can blow up houses. It also can herniate discs just by proximity, so look out. But I've also got a Radial Tone Bone Hot British, a Boss OD-20, OS-2, MXR Dist+, and honestly I can get just about any overdrive or distortion sound I want with those.

I have also played through a cranked plexi and a JMP something something at a meetup a year or so ago, and it was quite nice. but it was almost too loud even with earplugs, and everyone was running for the hills. So yeah, cranking a half stack can be fun but it's also REALLY FREAKIN LOUD.

This is why I dig attenuators! Especially the Badcat Unleash.

Extending: I had used it on travel listening through the headset and was quite impressed on the sound. Yesterday, I managed to connect it to my Hifi stereo. The impression was it is not made for this. I had already learned that the headphone output volume of the iPad is fairly low powered. The overall sound through the stereo then was thin and lifeless.

I may still use it on the go. But for now, it's not my preference at home.

Tube distortion has limits - Phaez mentioned this on their website in designing one of their tube amps for a client to "have as much tube-distortion as possible". Marshall hit the wall in 1989, hence the JCM-900. You're not going to get Dimebag/Pantera distortion from just tubes (I believe Dime's Randalls had solid-state preamps), and those that prefer just-tubes for distortion are not playing anything approaching modern Metal music.

Ha, ha. I thought this was dead funny. "Limits". Well not if you are in the zone where is sounds sweet and great.

Who thinks Dimebag had good tone? It's a damn chainsaw. Use all the pedals you want for that. Cheez, want more gain than a JCM800 can deliver and you'r in Korn country, or pantera for that matter. Who wants to go there? It's just as bad as wearing shorts on stage. Oh, wait he did. Lolz. :D Just kidding....

Modern metal music sucks! :D

edit: what I mean is that a great sounding amp that has the power tubes distorting usually sounds way sweet. More gain and it, to my ears, becomes kinda over the top, and most of the time has to rely on pre amp gain (which I usually don't like) or a pedal of some kind. But you can use a tube screamer to goose the preamp section in to distorting the power tubes. That can be really sweet. Or a treble booster type of pedal.

For singlecoil guitars a tube screamer, or vintage RAT, can be great to boost things up. Just not to much of the hot sauce. A strat has the tendency to sound a little thin through a Marshall anyways, so a pedal often makes sense.

But what the hell do I know. Use all the pedals you want. Personally I use my old Fulldrive when I play my Newport or T62. And the great Fulltone Catalyst pedal for gnarly fuzz tones.

Mighty close to cork sniffery, there, Disturber. That, and a "Get off my lawn" kind of elderly perspective

But you underscore a valid point- that it's all in the ear of the beholder, i.e. very subjective.

Yeah, I was just takin' the piss. As I wrote, what do I know...? The Swedish band ENTOMBED used the dreadfull BOSS HM2 for their classic guitarsound on their first albums, perhaps still does. Bands in this genre pay big bucks for this (stinkin') pedal.

Although I think they are a cool band, when it comes to guitar tone.... ...it kinda sucks. It fits the music though:

And the Swedish band Meshuggah used Line 6 modules for their sound 10 years ago. I think they use them FX modellers now. For that kinda sound, who needs tubes. Its just buzzing anyways, lolz.

Overdrive - amp.

Distortion - pedal.

Actually, I removed the Double Drive from my pedalboard altogether last month. The green and red channels on my JVM sound great as is. Maybe I'll put a boost in the chain someday.

You've obviously never heard bubs play.
