Jakeboy Posted August 16, 2014 Posted August 16, 2014 Sweet should have covered it back in the 70s, but better late than never....Ace was struggling, but he did t have his band so I can cut him some slack.
LordOfTheThighs Posted August 17, 2014 Posted August 17, 2014 The Sweet version sounded pretty good. Sounded like Steve Priest on the spoken parts. That's usually his M.O. Sweet must have been returning the favor, since Ace covered Fox On The Run, acouple of years ago.
crunchee Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 Interesting article, here: https://music.yahoo.com/news/kiss-guitarist-ace-frehley-paul-stanley-gene-simmons-040040176.html Who needs reality TV when you've already got KISS? BTW, anybody seen 4th and Loud yet on AMC?
devrock Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 That was painful to watch and listen to. Ace is so out of key, it's not even funny. Also, what's the deal with the black tape covering the brand of his guitar??? I see this a lot on TV shows.
crunchee Posted August 20, 2014 Author Posted August 20, 2014 Occasionally (and this is just my guess), the black tape gets used on instruments and amps, so as not to imply endorsement of that particular brand. Sometimes, it's that particular TV show's policy. Sometimes, it's because the musician isn't getting any endorsement $$$ to play that brand, and guitar/amp companies can't easily use images that show their gear being used, if it has the brand name taped over. It's basically an 'image' game.
tmsfo Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I was a HUGE Kiss fan. Ace was the reason I started playing guitar. That said, there are a half dozen songs after 1980 that I can listen to without thinking "man, that sucks". Paul can't sing any more, Ace could NEVER sing and the two position pentatonic noodling has been passé since Eddie put a pick to strings. I've made it through about 30 seconds of Ace's new stuff. It's just painful to listen to.
anotherfreak Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 The song was written by Russ Ballard who had a good run writing songs in the 70's. Here is the original version of New York Groove. That's the one I remember! and yeah, the old one's better..........by quite a bit, and I dig the roots
cynic Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I've made it through about 30 seconds of Ace's new stuff. It's just painful to listen to.This. I'm actually a little surprised at the negative reaction to the Fallon appearance. He's been that bad for a good long while.

I'm actually a little surprised at the negative reaction to the Fallon appearance. He's been that bad for a good long while.I've never been a fan of his in the first place. I don't know why, but I YouTube'd some of his live performances a couple of years ago (maybe it was when his last album came out) and was, honestly, appalled. Sloppy as hell. And just nothing...there. It's amazing to me he's had any sort of career after KISS to speak of. I know everyone has their own tastes and such, but I truly do wonder if Ace die-hards hear something completely different than the rest of us - or just fool themselves into not wanting to face reality.
Steve Haynie Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Maybe we do not fool ourselves, but we do listen to Ace in context.
cynic Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 Exactly. As bad as he can be, I still enjoy seeing him play because he just doesn't give a shit that he's become "less than" over the years. He's rock & roll!
murkat Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 " I know everyone has their own tastes and such, but I truly do wonder if Ace die-hards hear something completely different than the rest of us "well, Ace, as well with some other limelighted guitarists, it is not just about "notes", etc.what I here is the swagger, slanky, spontaneous, fury, angst, raunch, juvenile, self taught approach to the guitar.Plenty of other players fit that bill in one way or other. Also to consider on the other side of the same coin...I was an impressionable teen when Kiss Alive came out.and to here a Les Paul through a couple of Marshall's cranked on 10, unknowing to me of anything guitar/ amp,and to me, sounding fucking god like... not god's right hand, but more like god's son of a bitch...that was it. I want that. that.that is what I hear.
mathman Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I never "got" KISS. But they were big with my friends. I liked a few songs. To me they were like the Ramones but faking it. ( I realize the Ramones were later and I loved the Ramones!). While the Ramones were honest root rock, KISS always seemed an act.Just my opinion.
Armitage Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Swagger, Ace had it in... dare I say... Spades! It was gone by Destroyer though. The last song Rock and Roll on Alive is up to your eyeballs with it, or even Rock and Roll All Night.
