specialk Posted March 13, 2021 Posted March 13, 2021 Guitar tone can be too "dirty", but can it also be too "clean"? Quote

django49 Posted March 15, 2021 Posted March 15, 2021 Relatively rare picture of Segovia as opening act for Jimi Hendrix. After the Monkees debacle Hendrix wanted Segovia to open for the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and of course Segovia was glad to oblige. Segovia later reneged because his fake Marshall stack was smaller than Jimi's fake Marshall stack. Segovia always thought that size mattered. Segovia was famously quoted about this experience saying "When one puts up a building one makes an elaborate scaffold to get everything into its proper place. But when one takes the scaffold down, the building must stand by itself with no trace of the means by which it was erected. That is how a musician should work." While no one was exactly sure what Segovia meant by this, it should be noted that at Woodstock Hendrix's amps were on elaborate scaffolds. When asked how this affected his personal life on the road after being a second string attraction to groupies who could not get to Hendrix, Segovia laughed and said, "I've had three wives and three guitars. I still play the guitars." 4 Quote

LucSulla Posted March 19, 2021 Author Posted March 19, 2021 (edited) I may be a 41-year-old type 2 diabetic with a stent, but damn it, I can still run a mile and deadlift 315 lb. for reps. And I am tired of living under the jack booted tyranny of pansy ass local sound engineers.  I'M GOING BACK TO A 4X12! Those passive aggressive jackholes assume you can't orient the thing to not kill people the moment they see walk in. Well, I can. And I need more elevation to properly accommodate my drink when I play. And I don't need your monitor mix when I have four speakers behind me and an EQ set to do nothing but give me +10dB for my solos. DAMN RIGHT I'M RUNNING IT IN MY LOOP. I never quit using one because I got too old to carry it. I quit using them because I got punk'd out by whiny ass sound engineers and band members who bitch about volume and then always end up drowning me out in the mix.  This will no longer stand. The 4x12 is coming back... and pray it's not snakeskin. Edited March 19, 2021 by LucSulla 3 1 4 Quote

Steve Haynie Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 Make sure your cabinet has cast frame EV's with big magnets, too! 1 Quote
stobro Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 For down tuning, I suggest a 4X18 with some EVs, like their MTL4. 263 pounds of sound! 4 Quote

I do have a couple of 'em hanging around here.  Why do old Marshall cabs just look about like something you would expect to look after getting shoved in trunks and playing shows for years but old Mesa cabs look like something out of a Hellraiser film? What are people doing with these things? I'm probably about to head to Nashville to by a 1960av cab.  Probably going to yank two of the V30s and throw two neo-Creambacks in to mix. So I guess I'm kinda going the opposite direction. 1 Quote

I had much the same reaction to a Crusty Cabs 4x10 with a Silver and a Blue in the top. Staggered works too. Â 2 Quote

Staggered works too.  I learned that by accident with a Lopoline 2x12 cab, because I only had 1 speaker to put in it. I finally put the second one in there and it doesn't sound nearly as good. 1 Quote

I cannot say scientifically, but it seems to me like a cabinet such as my shop built 1 x 12 "Forte 3D" replicas get a bigger sound than a typical 2 x 12......While combining the best parts of open and closed back cabinets. (They have side ports rather than a port or a missing speaker on the front). Of course stacking two 1 x 12 cabinets does make it " bigger and better". My favorite combination is with an EVM 12L below, an Alncio cream on top. 3 Quote
