Ideas for new pickups for a Prototype

I really like my prototype but I find I am really liking singles now that i got to try one. I am thinking a humbucker sized p90 and some type of fat strat or tele pickup. I would like to get hum cancellation in the middle positon just don't know I can if I am looking at bridge pickups. That and I am not sure if the two would play well together or just sound off.

I am pretty useless at describing tone so I will let my friend YouTube lend a hand hopefully the links work. I am not a tone chaser but I think these three convey the sound I am after. P90 for west a tele for gibbons and hopefully middle hum for nugent. They sound a bit similar just not sure what to call this type of sound.

Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever

ZZ Top - Tush

Mountain Mississippi Queen

Then again maybe somethin like a screaming deamon and Billy Cragan ds 2. Though sticking with singles woul make it easier to keep an even volume between the two.

Hmmm cant seem to get the mountian video to make a window but the link works

Dimarzio Bluesbucker and virtual vintage Blues you'll have to order the V VB wihout the Flange. The Bluesbucker will give you a P90 Sound but is also splittable to the Slug Side and give you a single coil sound closer tot he bridge. So you would have P90 Sounds, single coil sound and with the V VB you will get the Tele'ish sound.

IMHO the stock single coil Dimarzio is a great pickup for the guitar I'd just change up the bridge but a Covered Humbucker/P90 doesn't fit because of the radius of the Pickup Ring.

Good Luck!

If your going to go that route be sure to got to Frets on the Net and get a replacment ring to modify because you don't want to modify the original HARD TO IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND. BTW you can also do the RIO Grande Thing. They have a Motherbucker style setup with ring included.

I put an EJ Custom Dimarzio in my Phantom Custom. I really like the pickup, but it's too close sound wise to the bridge single coil. I need more definition between the pickup positions (eventually).

GMan

James made my Motherbucker and I have a second one on order.

And I'm sure it kicks ass. I have three sets of his pickups and, having tried many other winders, he is really at the top of the heap.

Hmm, I'm very happy with the stock pickups in my Phantom Custom. It's one guitar I am afraid to change, after reading somewhere that Hamer spent a lot of time (perhaps on the original Prototype?) getting an HB and SC that would balance well together. I think they do in my PC and don't want to go down the pickup change rabbit hole trying to find two that work together AND sound better than what's already in there.

I'm not much of a tinkerer though - would sure love to hear some of your customized ones!

Regards,

Jim

This is for a new to me prototype. Not sure if its dumb to have two of the same guitar but i wanted something to experiment with and love the prototype. One of the main apeals is being able to have a really good bridge humbucker and single coil in the same guitar. So im not sure i want to put a true triple coil inthere.

Bubs - I looked at that site but I didn't see a triple ring. Is it a special order thing? What about the radius makes it not work? It has more space on either side than in some of my other guitars.

I'm guessing original prototype singles and those hmr1 pickups are hard to come by since you have been looking for some for a while now.

Radius on a Covered Humbucker is smaller in the corners, so it will hit in the corners. Yep you just have to email him an he will make you one. I think you have to ask for a glossy finish. I did not so mine is kind of a Matte Finish, but they look good. Give me a little while and I'll take a shot of it. I owe CMattes a picture of it.

So you have a 90's Phantom or an 80's Prototype?

Ah, I see what you mean now. Thats no good was planning on throwing a covered pickup I have been to busy to put in a guitar yet.

What would i refer to this as so he knows what i want? Can I assume the mounting screws are in the same position on the early and more recent models. Really dont want to have to drill any new holes in the guitar.

Its an 80s prototype I just really like the way light plays off of it gives it a copper like color to it. Would like to try on with the fuller neck but in no hurry to do that. What kind of finish is on these older ones. Funny how there are all of a sudden two 80s and a modern phantom up on ebay. Kept holding out for the right one and now there are 3 up there.

Just ask for a Hamer Triple Coil Ring, Hamer used the same rings on every version of from the Proto to the Phantoms so everything will line up just fine. Nitro Finish on the Prototypes.

The plastic only comes in matte finish it seems.

The virtual vintage blues looks interesting so does the heavy blues 2. They dont seem popular compared to the protrack and area 61 though. I am guessing that is more to do with people looking for that strat tone. I just wish there was a better way to hear what pickups sound like rather than just random YouTube videos.

I've used the Vitual Blues and Heavy Blues 2. Basically the they are hotter single coils and starting with the Vintage Blues you have a little less high end and a little more midrange, The Heavy Blues and the Heavy Blues 2 keep moving in that direction, increased output, less high end and more Midrange. What are going to go with in the Bucker Position?

Thats the part i am stuck on. The VV Blues was already on my list before you mentioned it so I am definitely getting one now. My first guitars were all humbucker. Then i got one with a coil tap and asside from the volume drop i loved the sound. So really started to lie p90s. Partly because people on YouTube rarely shred with them so i ejoyed those videos a lot more. So I have not looked into humbuckers much as there are so many and with the videos dont do well showing the pickup in clean an mild overdrive.

I do know i dont want anything high output. No overly bright or twangy pickups either. I do have a old dimarzio megadrive i was thinking of pulling out and putting the guitar up as a PIF. The guitar rarely comes out of its case and I just keep it so I have one guitar with a floyd. Basically I want a low or medium output that would match well with the VV Blues. To use terms I have seen used before something gutsy snotty ballsy something with snarl like a p90.

Ones I am looking at in no particular order and far from a final list

Screaming demon

Blues bucker

PRS Deep dish 2

P90 style - to many to list

Double D - dont know much about it but tele on steroids sound like a good thing

Dean leslie west mountian of tone

If your going with the VV Blues be sure to order it without the flange. Mike at MikesMusic may already have them on in stock. Be sure to check his ebay store, I do know he does not have a Bluesbucker in stock but I would start wtih it to go along with the Blues.

Food for thought that the blues is a great pickup for warming up a Strat and giving it a bit of a fatter sound but you putting it in an all Mahogany Guitar and placing it further from the bridge. The original set of Prototype pickups was to give the sound of a Sunburst in the humbucking position and a tele'ish sound with the single coil. The middle position with tone rolled off was just icing on the cake! ;) I setup Phantom#1 with a PhatCat in the Humbucker position and the OEM Single for my twang. Both of them together created in the middle created a really cool HiFi Sound for strumming chords and picking. Good Luck don't be worried if you don't get it on the first shot but start with dimarzios and adjust from there.

I don't have any of the original pickups so I am starting frm scratch there. Would simply turning around the ring so the single is closer to the bridge worth trying?

Was planning on getting a fender mustang guitar before this one came up. So if I don't like them in a mahogany guitar maybe it will be a better fit in that one. Really have no experience in pickup swaping so this first time around is more guess work in what I will like.

Thanks again for all your help

Nope won't work, the flange hits the wood. You can order them without the flange and if you order from Mike it won't take long to get them.

Posted

I understand the flange part you just mentioned compared to a strat the single on a proto. Would turning it around so the single is closer to bridge instead of the humbucker.

Posted

I don't think so, the flange actually sticks out further than the ring itself when mounted. Plus your ring is angled it would look funny and maybe close enough to rub on the strings.

Posted

Sorry im not being very clear. Im not trying to avoid a problems with the flange. Assuming it has no flange would rotating the ring to make the single facing the bridge. Would it sound any better or is it better to keep it farther away like a tele.

Posted

Oh duh now i see what you ment by angled. Bad idea turning it around. Did the fretsonthe net ring angle like that. I imagine not since he hand makes them.

I don't know... the Sustainblock is pretty bright it will most likely make the single sound shrill and brittle. Mounted further away is what gives it that Tele kinda feel all you can do is try it your ears will tell you yes or no.
