My buddy Darrell sent me this. George Lynch and some Japanese guy jamming on a bunch a classic, some cool stuf and some REALLY cool stuff and some wanking.

I like Lynch a lot but, to me anyway, that was more wankin' than spankin'!

I enjoyed Eddie's clips earlier much better. Of course, Eddie's bandmates were better than what George had here.

The other guy's name is "Char." He's really good, but like every other Japanese guy his age his real desire is to be Eric Clapton.

1) Char sings in English like a homeless (looking) bass player dude I play with every once in a while at the local blues jam. Nice tone

I like Lynch a lot, this is a cool clip. The little singer has a lot of potential, I think....for example, she could be bent over the arm of a couch, and....well, nevermind. :angry: At least she sings a little better than Yoko, and looks MUCH better.

Totally incredible guitar playing.

Of course, Lynch didn't play anything that even remotely complimented the songs. George Lynch always struck me as a "Guitar Center shredder," the kind of guy who can play circles around anyone else, but can't play "Mustang Sally" twice the same way. Or, for that matter, play "Mustang Sally" and make it sound like "Mustang Sally." But I'm sure he'd insist on bringing his JCM900 stack to the jam night...

Can the guy play his weenie off? You betcha. Is he totally gawd-awful when it comes down to playing within the context of material presented? You betcha.

Dave, the one thing about the studded leather necklace is she thinks it's cute. She's not trying to be "S&M woman." It's fashion. If you walk downtown here on any given weekend, you'd think it was a hooker's convention. It's not - they think they're being cute or fashionable and most of them dress for themselves, not to attract men. Weird place dude....weird.

Back to the subject: Char mentioned that the girl is 17. She can sing her ass off for 17.

Lynch is one of my favorite guitarists. Clearly this is improvised. This is Lynch being Lynch. His style is coming accross here, but I think it works most of the time with Voodoo Chile being the worst out of the 3. This is Japan where Lynch is very well respected as a guitarist. Though the audience is a bit relaxed.

I'm not slamming his style of play, I'm just saying (in a roundabout way) that unless you happen to either play guitar or happen to be a fan of shredding, this type of music would clear a bar out of paying patrons faster than a can of mace.

I don't want to rehash any number of flame wars that always are inherent in "guitar" boards, but 99% of the people who see live music (non-musicians AND musicians) want to hear a song that they recognize, not see a soloist blow their nut all night.

I belong to the group of people who want to hear a song they recognize. I couldn't even tell Lynch was playing a Hendrix song until the guy started singing. Come to think of it, nothing that Lynch played within the context of ANY of the songs chosen could have been identified by itself. If that's what he wanted to do, why bother with the singers/guitar players? Just plug in and go.

I have plenty of repect for Lynch's playing. Play away, Georgie...but just don't mask your wanking in the context of "oh, I'm playing stuff that was a huge influence on me..." and proceed to jerk off all over whatever "song" influenced him WITH NO CONCERN FOR ANYTHING THAT HAD TO DO WITH THE SONG. Sorry.

Yes, very observant (seriously). He proceeds to play every solo from "Tooth & Nail" over Hendrix and the Beatles :angry:

Japanese fans want the player to be "as expected" with no punches from outta the blue. So, when Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman, Richie Kotzen, etc. etc. come here (and their careers DEPEND on Japan) they're almost "uber" themselves, in other words they personify whatever characteristics it is that they're known for as players about 50 times.

I feel exactly the way RJoseph does, but I understand what these guys get paid to (have to) do.

I totally agree with RJoseph133's take on George Lynch. It reminded me of myself when I put my PC mp3 player on random and just start mindlessly shredding over whatever gets played; Perfect Circle, Indigo Girls, Thomas Dolby, etc... Now I have about 1/5 of the technical ability that Lynch does, but still I wouldn't expect that anybody would be interested in hearing me doing that (of course, if anyone did, I would be right up there like Lynch wanking away :angry:).

Im a huge Lynch fan but I found that vid to be pretty much just goofing off on the guitar. I couldnt recognize most of the tunes either...however Im one of those guys that can watch wankery with glee! :angry:

BCR Greg- Thanks for sharing the George Lynch & Char guitar jam at the local Japanese cable show. I've seen this video on the Huge Racks Inc. website.

I thought it was kind of cool to watch Char, George Lynch and the female vocalist jamming on some cover tunes of Hendrix and the Beatles. I didn't expect Lynch to be playing these songs note for note, just him jamming over the changes while Char did the rhythm parts, vocals and some leads. The young female vocalist sounded cool and complemented the jam session. It was fun watching the video to see Lynch cutting loose in his style, jamming on classic rock songs to a Japanese local cable audience who probably have no idea who he is. Lynch exhibited a different side to his playing somewhat, he has good tone and used effects tastefully. Total ESP endorsement!!

I would have to agree that Paul Gilbert, Marty Friedman. Ritchie Kotzken,etc. made a musical career from the Japanese market. Most of these guys are Americans and haven't got the recognition for their talent here in the U.S. It's a shame for that to happen, but the music business is very unfair towards the "shredder" guitarists. If I was of the stature of the guys mentioned above, I would leave the U.S. market and go to either Japan or Europe.

The U.S. music market is saturated with young and mostly untalented vocal artists created from American Idol, etc. Musicians and bands of worthy talent, regardless of genre, go unregonized in this country because of MTV, Fuse and Clear Channel Communications controlling the content of what is shown on cable, satellite or television. I have to seek out the artists I like by visiting their websites to see what's going on with them, buying their CDs and attending their shows. That's because the record companies are not supporting their older artists. Bummer. Today's pop culture can go into the garbage can.

.....it wasn't a local cable TV show, it was a "special live" (as the Japanese call it) in Tokyo FM's studio (not a minor place by any means). Secondly, George Lynch is HUGE here in Japan. I'm quite sure the audience knew who he was.

George's most recent visit was pretty productive. In addition to the jam with Char at Tokyo FM, he also did the Japan Musical Instruments Fair (jam session with the new "young gun" in Japan Takayoshi Omura ) and he's also featured in the January '05 Recording magazine with Char. BTW: Char has a shitload of cool Voxes, Carrs, Strats and Teles.
