BTMN Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 One of my favorite shows I have ever attended was a September 1979 Cleveland EWF show. So long Mr. White thanks for the great tunes!!! https://www.yahoo.com/music/earth-wind-fire-founder-maurice-223647351.html
tomteriffic Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 In my ears quite a bit during that time and a little earlier. Great tunes, arrangements, concepts, etc. So long and thanks!
Steve Haynie Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Let Mr. White be the last to go for a while. 2016 is already a bad year.
Jakeboy Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 RIP to a funk master who was part of my teen years....
tommy p Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 I've seen them 3 times in the last few years and they were amazing. Maurice exuded pure joy onstage. Another terrible loss in a really bad year for our musical heroes. Edit: I was thinking of Verdine with my comments. Still another sad day in music.
tbonesullivan Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Was Maurice touring with them? I read that he pretty much stopped gouring with the group in 1995 due to parkinson's disease. He only appeared on stage for special occasions. He had been diagnosed relatively young back in the late 80s, around 20 years ago. He fought it for a long time.
Boomerang~Junkie Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Another painful loss of a phenomenal musician - ugh. I'm with Steve, this sh!t can stop now for a few years. I've seen them a handful of times, starting in the late 70's. An incredibly talented, soulful and very tight group with top notch sound systems and lighting. Truly professionals in every way. Thank you for your awesome, fun music. RIP Maurice.
FGJ Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 A great band from my childhood. Sad to see one of the greats go. Seems like everyone had that first "Best of..." album when I was a kid. I played mine to death every day. A buddy of mine is friends with the band. Here's a bass guitar of his signed by the band (this is an old Instagram image I posted from when I did a caricature drawing for this custom build):
Disturber Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 The first band I loved that was not pop or rock music. After I discovered The Stones and The Beatles, then ABBA and Kiss my dad brought home the Earth Wind and Fire compilation with September. Loved it from the start. Been a fan ever since. RIP.
Hamerica Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Seriously, these are getting to be too frequent. Earth, Wind, and Fire was one of those bands whom I knew their hits. The only album I own from them was their greatest hits. I went to a twenty year old somethings wedding and most of the "music" the dj "spun" I was unfamiliar with. He announced he was going to play an "oldie" and it was "September". Those over 50 danced and the younger crowd sort of participated. They played a couple more songs from artists like Kool & The Gang, and the obligatory KC & The Sunshine Band. I knew Maurice had stopped touring on a regular basis due to his illness. The White brothers had surrounded themselves with tremendous talent and their influence in popular music was evident. RIP, I think I will pull out that record tonight and give it a spin. Hamerica
hamerican gigolo Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 Maurice went from a jazz drummer to an entirely different vision. R.I.P.
crunchee Posted February 5, 2016 Posted February 5, 2016 RIP Mr White. EWF's music was ALL over the radio of my youth, back in the 70's and early '80's. Speaking of youth, I'm noticing (as some of us here have probably already noticed) that the gap, between age at date of death of all these musical artists from my youth, and my own current age, is starting to shrink noticeably. And causes in more and more cases are looking to be less from a Rock N' Roll lifestyle, and more from simply living. Getting old doesn't always suck, but some of the process does, regardless of whether you want it to or not.
