mathman Posted June 18, 2017 Posted June 18, 2017 I am looking for anyone with experience doing love recording with either an iPhone external stereo mic such as the Zoom IQ6 or using the portable recorder such as the Zoom H1. I don't really need the guitar input for the iPhone device so I am mainly interested in live (band volume) recording. I have an iPad with 128gb of storage so the IQ6 or 7 is tempting, but the zoom h1 is comparable for the price and doesn't need to use the iPad. Any Opinions or experiences to share would be appreciated. I bought an i-track pocket last year that was a nice little iphone input and microphone system in one. It was only $70 and could be used as a guitar input and a live recording device for an iphone or ipad. Worked really well. I recorded our band reunion jams with it. But unfortunately it wasn't very sturdy. The plastic case is strong but the connector for the usb plug in the back got bumped and broke the small soldier connection from the circuit board. It was my fault that it broke, but it isn't as study as one would like. It no longer works. So I am in the market for another.
RobB Posted June 18, 2017 Posted June 18, 2017 I use the Zoom H4n to record rehearsals. It makes surprisingly good recordings. We stick it on a tripod boom stand, run an SM57 (guitar) into one XLR input, bass direct box into the other and center the two external mics about five feet from the drum kit, slightly above the kick. Recording MP3 @320Kbps, then off to our drop boxes. Good enough sound for archival purposes.
velorush Posted June 18, 2017 Posted June 18, 2017 I am sorry if this is totally off the mark, but Pete Thorn did a great demo of the Apogee One a few years back and even though I don't run Apple (maybe I don't have to?) It stuck with me: Hope this is at least somewhat relevant to your question.
mathman Posted June 18, 2017 Author Posted June 18, 2017 I know about the Apogee one and it isn't something I was considering, but that does sound pretty good in that video you posted. I was really wanting stereo but it's not that important for what I'm doing. I already have a really nice interface for my computer that works with my iPad but it's not really portable. but I think the Apogee one works with the iPad also. Something to think about. Thanks
mathman Posted June 30, 2017 Author Posted June 30, 2017 Still thinking about the zoom either for the iphone or the self contained version, but I found the i-track pocket for only $20 new at B&H. Ordered two.
Ting Ho Dung Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 Does this help at all? This is the firs I've heard of it (naturally).

Thanks, that is similar to what I did at our first reunion jam. The i-Track makes a great recording of live music. IMO, much better than the iphone mic.
