dmometalguitar Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Using my Hamer Vector (KK Downing model), I spent some time matching the tone of the Painkiller album (Judas Priest). I just uploaded a video showing the tone + info to download my preset... If you guys want to check out my tones of other metal albums as well, here's the full playlist:
Dave Scepter Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 You actually had me singing there for a minute 😆 Faster than a bulletTerrifying screamEnraged and full of angerHe is half man and half machineRides the metal monsterBreathing smoke and fireClosing in with vengeance soaring high~~~ He is the painkiller
bkrownd Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Cool - I've been subscribed for a few weeks I don't have the software, but enjoy listening to the riffage anyhow
Steve Haynie Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Your Vector KK is being used as the metal gods intended! Judas Priest plays Atlanta next Wednesday.
scottcald Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Cool. Sounds like the album. Is that Vector stock? The amp and EQ surprised me. The tone has a lot of mid in it, but you've cut a lot of them. BTW, I also looked at your Floyd Rose info. Love the Floyd collage. Hilarious!

Personally, I preferred Priest's tone on British Steel, Screaming for Vengeance, Defenders of the Faith and Turbo. If I had to pick one, though, Vengeance it tops for me.

Also, let's not forget some of the song titles - Between the Hammer & The Anvil, Leather Rebel, Metal Meltdown, etc...

I will be working on the Screaming for Vengeance tone as well. I will post a similar video when I get it done. After Painkiller, Defenders of the Faith is my second favorite Priest album. Really great guitar sound, although the production is a bit muffled (for lack of a better word).

It's like they tried to put together the Vengeance and Point of Entry tones. Maybe they didn't use mics as close up on the speakers? When I first got it, the first 4 songs on the album just really killed it. To me, from Unleashed in the East through Defenders they were really killing it with their tone, even thought they were different on each album.

Although underrated, another incredible guitar tone they have is the Jugulator album. Really aggressive and thick guitar sound.

I lowered the mids because the original guitar tone added to the Mesa simulation had double the mids. It was difficult to get that tone - a lot of trial and error. If you notice in the chain, I have a non-standard setup - a pre-amp EQ added after the amp. That little pedal was a miracle to get the EQ right. I believe the Vector was a standard model. It looks similar (in terms of specs) to the other KK Downing models from the mid-80s.
