bry4321 Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 (edited) I got the Sunburst mentioned here I have it for another couple of days before the GC return period is up. It is, not surprisingly because of the extra-thick body and neck, very heavy by my standards (>10 lbs), which may be a deal-breaker. If I keep it I would feel obligated to offer up my BCR Jr on here, and I'm not sure I am prepared to do that. But it sure is pretty. Will update with more impressions and measurements when I have the chance. Edited May 9, 2024 by bry4321 13 Quote

Steve Haynie Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 My Sunburst is heavy, but it resonates just right to me. The trade-off is worth it. If the Sunburst you bought sounds good you should take that into consideration. A heavy guitar can be used in rotation with other guitars. 3 Quote

bry4321 Posted May 9, 2024 Author Posted May 9, 2024 Bridge pickup measures 9.24. Labeled P-90 1B Neck measures 8.16. Labeled P-90 1N. I believe these may be SD "Vintage" pickups based on that. 44.3 mm across at nut. Thick neck based on feel but I have not measured it. Lots of sustain. I don't have the original GC posting info but I think it said body is an extra 1/4" thick. The neck appears to have more give than I am used to. Not like I am going to pull it off the body or anything, but there's definitely more change in tone from fairly light pressure on the neck by the nut than I'm used to. Intonation and playability were good out of the case. I didn't restring it. When I switch to the neck pickup there is a magnetic connection that wants to keep it there, and it takes a bit of pressure to break that when switching back to bridge pickup. It's not spotless but there aren't many dings on it. The most obvious ones are from where it was on a wall hanger. I will post a pic of the cavity and back but there's a bunch of glare on the latter. Anyway those are some first impressions. Thanks for the replies, serious and otherwise! 5 1 Quote
bry4321 Posted May 11, 2024 Author Posted May 11, 2024 Update: I returned it to GC. Which by the way was incredibly good to deal with buying/shipping/returning. Thanks all. 2 1 Quote

Combination of weight and thick neck and just not immediately bonding with it although I thought it looked great and had no flaws. But for the price I couldn’t justify keeping it especially since I already have a P90 guitar. 2 Quote
bry4321 Posted May 12, 2024 Author Posted May 12, 2024 Unexpected update to share happy ending. The day after I returned this a 79 Sunburst showed up on FB marketplace. It was not a $350 garage sale find but it sure wasn’t what people are asking on Reverb either. It needs some TLC but I feel like my daily FB/Craigslist scans finally paid off. 9 Quote

bry4321 Posted May 12, 2024 Author Posted May 12, 2024 Expect a bunch of questions in “ask the experts” soon. These are pics from seller. Needs a switch tip and strap button for starters. And a dusting wouldn’t hurt. 4 Quote

Strap buttons were similar to the aluminum ones Gibson used/uses. The switch tip can be ordered from Rickenbacker.com or fretsonthenet.com 1 Quote
