Submariner85 Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 (edited) Took my wife to see them last night because she loves Lionel Richie and that’s what we do. I take her to metal concerts and I go with her to country or stuff like Lionel. it was enjoyable. A little over 3 hours. for all them being old, they put on a great show. Only complaint was the first several songs Lionel did, his volume on his mic was a little too low but they fixed that part of the way through. She had a great time and so did I. next up Melevolence, Kerry King, Mastodon and Lamb of God. Edited May 26, 2024 by Submariner85 15 Quote
zorrow Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 When I was a teen I loved The Commodores and Lionel Ritchie solo. From Earth, Wind and Fire I know just the hits, but that’s awesome music too. I’ve always liked commercial R&B, including the Jackson 5, Kool and The Gang and Chic, amongst others. Not sure at this point I would go see them live, but their music is always a blast. I’m glad you went! 3 Quote
Gabe Posted May 26, 2024 Posted May 26, 2024 In the past I considered Earth, Wind and Fire to be just another disco-group. Until I saw the band perform live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague (The Netherlands). Great funk, fantastic musicianship! I'm a fan! Gabe 😀 5 Quote

crunchee Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 Supposedly (I'd heard this story before, and it's also in their Wiki profile), the name 'Commodores' came about when member William King opened up a dictionary and went looking for a band name at random. "We lucked out, we almost became the Commodes". Commodores - Wikipedia 1 4 Quote

LucSulla Posted May 29, 2024 Posted May 29, 2024 (edited) That documentary about the making of "We Are the World" is 100% worth watching. Lionel is fiercely talented and seems like an all around great guy. Another example that, along with food, music is the best thing the South has ever done. Edited May 30, 2024 by LucSulla 3 Quote
Biz Prof Posted May 30, 2024 Posted May 30, 2024 '70s and '80s funk-inflected R&B was some seriously strong and influential stuff. Excellent use of harmony, horn fills and stabs, and locked-in bass/drum grooves that pulsated stridently, albeit not in an overwhelming way throughout a tune. Truly solid musicianship, in most cases. Hard to fathom how fans went from liking that style of music to modern, computer generated, soulless and melodically bankrupt hip hop shite. 5 Quote

Along those lines, I can't recommend enough the recent Max (HBO for us old timers) four-part documentary on Stax. The first episode is an amazing story of starting a country and western recording studio in a black neighborhood in Memphis, only to be overtaken by the amazing talent existing within blocks. The last episode came as a complete shock as I had no idea what actually happened to Stax - scandals at both CBS and Union Planters Bank. 4 Quote

tommy p Posted June 3, 2024 Posted June 3, 2024 I saw EWF maybe 15 years ago and was absolutely floored by how great they were. I went back and saw them the very next time they got close enough. I was so pleasantly surprised by my enjoyment of EWF that I went and saw Hall and Oates when they came around and THEY were incredible too. Gotta keep an open mind. 3 Quote
